Automated production, testing, and assembly systems based on industry robots form the focus of research. Efficient production solutions for large parts as well as lightweight construction with composite materials and the efficient implementation of small series are key themes. With aircraft construction as main application of research, the scientific achievements also contribute to the improved construction of wind turbines, ships, and electric cars, and advance aircraft maintenance and medicine technology. With the formation of the new facility, the Hamburg University of Technology complements and expands its research in the field of aviation. Next to the new institute, further three aviation-related facilities have been set up since 2006: aircraft systems technology, air transport systems, an aircraft cabin system with the professors Frank Thielecke, Volker Gollnick, and Ralf God as heads.
